Job Description

Factory Location: Stanwood, MI
Compensation: $29.00 / hour 
Shift differential: 6%-8% of base hourly rate paid for applicable hours worked 
Schedule: Day Shift, 10-hour rotation
Ability to work holidays and weekends per business needs

Job Summary
The Microbiology Technician is responsible for ensuring the microbiological and sensory quality of processes, raw materials and finished products through testing, diagnosis and record keeping. They will perform multiple tasks including sampling, plating, and media preparation in a laboratory setting. This position will also be responsible for assisting in Sensory testing program, hygiene program, and implementation of factory food safety programs.

 

Key Responsibilities
- Performing daily microbiological testing on water processes, finished products, etc. using aseptic techniques
- Train operators in proper cleaning and hygiene practices
- Reading plates and communicating results to management 
- Preparing daily and monthly microbiology analysis reports
- Performing microbiological/Sensory investigations as needed
- Preparing and tracking positive controls of bacteria
- Preparing culture media
- Maintenance of all equipment and inventory in the Microbiology Lab
- Ensuring the Micro Database is up-to-date
- Maintenance of sample ports throughout process piping and equipment
- Reviewing all SOPs within the Microbiology Lab and keeping them current
- Assist in sensory program both in sample preparation and data collection
- Participate in Proficiency testing
- Help maintain State of Michigan lab certification
- Function as administrator for QA database sites (Enact, Presage, Sensory Database)
- Provide laboratory back-up/Vacation coverage as needed
- All other duties as assigned

Qualifications

- Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry, Microbiology, Food Science/Technology, or comparable Science field preferred.

- Working knowledge of Microsoft Suite, Globe SAP, and InfinityQS preferred

- 1-2 years experience in a microbiology laboratory setting preferably in a food plant.

- Experienced in HACCP and Food Safety is preferred

- Must have familiarity with operating laboratory equipment including micro filtration equipment, incubators, autoclaves, UV sterilization devices, pH meters, etc.

- Strong communication and organizational skills (written and verbal)

- Attention to detail and high degree of self-governed responsibility

- Ability to move/handle 50 lbs and stand on your feet for long periods of time throughout the day.
